Title: Slate Maintenance
Introduction:Care, Upkeep and Maintenance
After installation, thorough cleaning must be carried out to remove excess grout, cement, stains, dust, soil and other kinds of dirt.
All excess grout, cement or paste must removed and cleaned from joints.
For cleaning, only clean water and neutral detergents and other kinds of cleaning materials.
Cleaning must be carried out immediately after installation, before grout, cement and other kinds of setting materials are dry.
Acids, whether pure or diluted, should never be used.
Only grout, cement, sealants, impregnators and cleaning materials from reliable manufacturers should be used.
The selected sealant, whether water-based or solvent-based, must be able to enhance the color and texture of the stone and make it impervious to oil, grease, fat, dirty water, and stains.
Floor wax or polishing wax should never be used on slate since it alters the color of the stone and makes it more prone to the accumulation of dust and dirt.

Introduction:Method using Sand / Cement Montar base
STEP 1
Montar to be composition of 4 parts pit sand, 1 parts cement to be screeded into a depth of approximately 8mm thickness using "screed sticks" . Also allow for required fall and bed thickness.
STEP 2
Support a straight edge on the screed sticks and draw it over the mix to obtain a level surface.
STEP 3
To prepare bonding agent, pour out sufficient for use in a container and add dry cement and stir until the mixture is of a semi-thick consistency.
STEP 4
Dust slate and apply bonding agent to back with brush in areas of one metre.
Place slate tile on the montar bed from leading edge to be tiled. Set tile in from each end to an string line.
STEP 5
Replace String line in with straight edge. Mark position of joints on straight edge. Tap tiles firmly into position into montar bed.
STEP 6
Slate tiles can be cut using a normal electric handyman saw and angle grinder fitted with a masonry blade.
STEP 7
Allow approximately 24 hours for tiles to set. Mix grout with water to a creamy paste and forced into tile joints with a squeegee.
STEP 8
Ensure all the excess grout is removed from the slate surface. Use clean sponge and change water regularly until the tiles are absolutely clean. Grout must be completely dry before sealing(approximately 3 days).
STEP 9
Slate sealer to be applied as per instruction detailed on slateceel slate sealer.
